Wilton Sports Roundup: Feb. 23

From two wins to a .500 regular season.

Chris Nugent and Ian Ross scored 16 points aoiece Wednesday as the Wilton High School boys basketball team defeated New Canaan 65-51 to complete a 10-10 regular.

The 10 wins is an eight-win improvement from last year's 2-18 finish. Wilton is headed to the Class L state tournament for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

Wilton never was challenged Wednesday, jumping out to a 24-7 lead after the first quarter. New Canaan did pull within 35-22 at the intermission, but didn't seriously threaten in the second half.

Weston Wilbur contributed 15 poiints as part of Wilton's balanced attack.

New Canaan finished the season at 2-18, although the Rams were coming off a 52-47 win over Harding.

The 10th-seeded Wilton girls basketball team (13-6) has earned a home game in the first round of the Class L state tournament and will host No. 23 Foran of Milford (9-11) on Tuesday.

If the Warriors advance, they will play at No. 7 seed RHAM (15-5) in the second round on Thursday. RHAM received a first-round bye.

Last season, Wilton was the 19th seed and upset FCIAC rival Darien 33-28 in the first round before losing to losing to No. 3 Torrington, 61-39 in the second round.
