The boys basketball team made its first appearance in the state since 2000 a successful one.

Weston Wilbur scored 20 points and Chris Nugent added 17 points as the 23rd-seeded Warriors defeated No. 10 University 70-63 in the first round of the Class L state tournament.

Ian Ross added 15 and Max Maudsley contributed for 14 for the Warriors, who will face No. 7 seed Trinity Catholic in the second round on Thursday. All of Ross's points came on 3-pointer.

Wilton improved to 11-10. Trinity Catholic advanced with a 69-43 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe.

The Wilton boys hockey team is seeded fourth in the Division II state tournament host No. 13 New Milford (10-9-1) in the first round on Tuesday. Faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Winter Garden Arena.

The Warriors (10-10) recovered from an 0-7 start to make the state tournament. They are coming off a 7-1 loss to New Canaan in the first round of the FCIAC tier one playoffs.

The winner of Tuesday's contest will take on either No. 5 Trumbull (11-9  regular season) or No. 12 Watertown-Pomperaug (10-10) in the quarterfinals on Friday.
