Windsor Police To Join Special Olympics Torch Run

Residents are invited to cheer on Windsor police as the Special Olympics Torch Run moves through town.

WINDSOR, CT — Windsor police officers will take part in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics on Thursday, June 4, with the route passing through town during the afternoon.

The Windsor leg is scheduled as Day 2, Leg 4 of the run. Residents are invited to line the route and cheer on members of the Windsor Police Department as they carry the Flame of Hope through town.

The run is scheduled to begin at 2:16 p.m. when participants turn right onto Route 159 out of the Windsor Shopping Center. The route will then pass Valley View Drive around 2:25 p.m. before turning left onto Route 178 West, also known as Park Avenue, around 2:30 p.m.

Runners are expected to pass Sage Park Road around 2:31 p.m., Trinity Church around 2:36 p.m. and John F. Kennedy School around 2:43 p.m.

The Windsor portion is expected to end around 2:47 p.m. at International Gospel Fellowship, where the run will continue with the Bloomfield Police Department, according to the Town of Windsor.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is described by Special Olympics organizers as the largest public awareness effort and grassroots fundraiser for Special Olympics.

The annual three-day run takes place each June ahead of the Special Olympics Summer Games. Law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes, known as Guardians of the Flame, carry the Flame of Hope into opening ceremonies for local, state, national and international competitions.

Popular year-round fundraisers tied to the Torch Run include Penguin Plunge, Tip-A-Cop and Coin Drop events.
