Windsor Schools Make Leadership Move, Budget Cuts

The board voted 7-1 to accept budget reductions requested by the Town Council, according to Windsor Public Schools.

WINDSOR, CT — Windsor’s Board of Education appointed a new chief of academics and pupil services and accepted $350,000 in budget reductions during a busy May, according to a monthly recap posted by Windsor Public Schools.

The board voted May 19 to appoint Liana Jorgensen as chief of academics and pupil services, effective July 1, according to the district. Windsor Public Schools said the new position will serve as a substitute for the assistant superintendent of instructional services role.

During the transition, William Fisher was announced as acting principal of Sage Park Middle School, beginning July 1, according to the district.

Budget Cuts Approved

The board also voted 7-1 to accept $350,000 in budget reductions requested by the Town Council, according to Windsor Public Schools.

The cuts include $150,000 from insurance deposits, $50,000 from technology, $55,000 from a new PSES administrative position, $45,000 from major maintenance, $36,000 from replacing a proposed BCBA technician position with a registered behavior technician position, and $14,000 from instructional services, according to the district.

Contract Ratified

Board members also ratified a successor four-year collective bargaining agreement with Windsor BOE Paraeducators Local 424-Unit 59.

The contract covers July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030, according to the district.

Students Recognized

Several students were recognized during the month, including Windsor High School students Michelle Huff and Emily “Kiki” Romero-Lewis, who received Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Student Leadership Awards.

Sage Park Middle School students Ella Elam and Roberto Marquez were also recognized as CABE Student Leadership Award recipients.

Three students received superintendent scholar awards. Ambar Liberato was named the Daniel Howard Scholar, Nerissa Williams was named the Dr. Earle S. Russell Scholar, and Atrayu Garg was named the Paul J. Sorbo Scholar, according to the district.

Syncere Morrison was also recognized for his work in the Windsor High School Fashion Design program, where the district said he has been learning design, marketing and merchandising with a goal of launching his own fashion line.

Student representative Andrew Blume was recognized by board members and Acting Superintendent Dr. Noha Abdel-Hady for his service to the Board of Education.

Teams, Teacher Honored

The board also recognized Windsor’s Unified Basketball team, which finished undefeated in the regular season for the second consecutive year and advanced to the Division I State Championship at Mohegan Sun Arena for the second straight year. The team finished as state runner-up, according to the district.

Windsor High School science teacher Joe Oblon was named the district’s Teacher of the Year.

The Windsor High School Robotics Team was also recognized after finishing 16th worldwide at a competition in Houston, according to the district.
