Charles L. Hebert, 71, a longtime resident of Windsor Locks, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Hartford Hospital.
Born on September 17, 1940 in Madawaska, ME; Charles was the son of the late Lucien and Mary Anne (Martin) Hebert and the husband of 48 years to Sandra Rabbett Hebert. Charles proudly served his country as a Lance Corporeal in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960. During a brief crisis in July 1958, Charles was one of 5,000 soldiers dispatched to Beirut, Lebanon. He was also chosen out of 1,500 men to raise the Flag on the Arizona at the site of Pearl Harbor with Dwight D Eisenhower. He also earned Medal’s for Sharp Shooting. He was a part of the Military Police. He was employed by C.G. Boswick and Rich Roofing as a Sheet Metal Mechanic. Charles was a talented artisan who worked various metals, especially copper. He was involved with some fine architectural metal working throughout various sites in CT, with both corporate and private buildings such as the Colt building dome, the Mark Twain House, Ivan Lendl’s home in southern, CT, the Capital dome and the Statue of Justice atop the Old State House in Hartford.
After retirement, he enjoyed driving the bus for his many friends at the Windsor Locks Senior Center. A master of ALL trades, in his leisure time, Charles enjoyed gardening, which he water fed during dry times with barrels of water that he collected from the rains, and shooting award winning pool. A woodsman, he was known for his “woodpile” and heating his house annually with the fruits of his labor. He was a member of the Polish National Home, the Italian-American Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the VFW all of Windsor Locks.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, besides his wife, Sandra of Windsor Locks, Charles is survived by his children, Mark C. Hebert and his wife, Monique and their daughter, Nicole A. Hebert of Enfield; and Lisa A. Schneider and her husband, James of Poquonock; his brothers, Joseph L.L. Hebert and his wife, Sandra of West Dudley, MA; and Thomas R. Hebert and his wife, Margaret of Willimantic and several nieces and nephews. Charles also leaves many close friends.
Charles was the Go To Guy for anyone who needed him, any time, any hour or any day.
Relatives and friends may join Charles’ family on Tuesday, morning, November 15, 2011 at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring Street, at 9:00 a.m. for a funeral procession to St. Mary’s Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial with full Military Honors will follow in Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday, evening from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home.
