Patch Picks: Ethnic Eats

A few suggestions of area restaurants to expand your palate.

You don’t have to travel far to find a new flavor to try out. This week, Patch Picks features ethnic restaurants, including Indian, Turkish, Mexican and Thai options. Let us know your favorite restaurants for ethnic food in your comments.

Taste of India
Online reviews rave about the authentic Indian food at in Windsor. There is a lunch buffet, which is a good way to try out new dishes, or you can ask the wait staff for recommendations when ordering off the menu.  The menu includes vegetable samosa, chicken tikka masala, and naan, a traditional Indian bread.

Hacienda Del Sol
offers fresh-made Mexican food in a cozy setting. The menu includes fajitas, steak, chicken and seafood dishes, burritos, enchiladas and more. Their homemade salsa has a delicious flavor without being too spicy and entrees are generous. Hours are Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Sawadee Thai Cuisine
Five different kinds of curry, duck dishes and pad Thai are all featured on the menu at Sawadee Thai Cuisine in South Windsor. Appetizers include chicken or beef satay, spring rolls and dumplings. The menu also includes an assortment of seafood dishes. Lunch is served Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch specials include soup or salad, a spring roll and steamed white rice.

Istanbul Mediterranean Grille
Whether you love Turkish food or it a new taste for your palate, check out the Istanbul Mediterranean Grill in Agawam. The restaurant offers a mix of cold and hot appetizers, entrees including lamb, chicken and beef kebabs, seafood and vegetarian offerings. It also has lahmacun, a thin dough topped with ground beef, minced tomatoes, parsley and seasonings.

Doner kebab, a popular dish with a mix of marinated beef and lamb slices, is available plain with rice or served over pita bread topped with tomato sauce and a side of homemade yogurt. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Izumi Japanese Restaurant
A Japanese steak house and sushi bar, offers a wide variety of sushi and sashimi, with more than two dozen hand rolls listed on their menu. The menu also includes teriyaki, hibachi and tempura offerings. Restaurant hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.
