Reckless Driver Winds Up in Windsor Locks Canal

The driver and two passengers escaped injury when their car plunged into the canal early Friday morning.

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — A Broad Brook man was charged with reckless driving early Friday morning after the car he was driving burst through a guardrail and ended up in the Windsor Locks Canal.

Around 12:26 a.m., a witness reported a car traveling at a high rate of speed appeared to have driven into the canal at the intersection of Main and Church streets. Upon arrival, police saw the driver and two passengers climbing out of the canal after exiting the car and swimming to safety, police said.

One person had a minor laceration, and all three refused medical treatment, police said.

An investigation found the vehicle was traveling south on Route 159 and went off the roadway, through a guardrail and into the canal, where it became completely submerged along the east bank, police said.

The driver, Thomas McCabe, 22, was given a field sobriety test and did not display any signs of intoxication. He was issued a summons for reckless driving.

A heavy duty tow truck was needed to remove the vehicle, and the Tolland County Fire Dive Team responded to assist in hooking up the vehicle for removal from the canal, according to police.
