For the Love of Woodbury: Mosaic Mural at Mitchell: Students Create Public Art

The mosaic mural will be displayed on the exterior of Mitchell Elementary School.

Mitchell Elementary School students are working on a large mosaic mural that will be displayed on the exterior of the school.

Joanne and Bruce Hunter from The Art Spot in Danbury are heading up the project, which is sponsored by the MES PTO.

Parents, teachers, staff and members of the community joined students to assist with the three-day project.

Although work began Thursday, Nov. 17, design of the mural started back in October when students contemplated the concept of community with the help of art teachers Cathy Russell-Patnaude and Laura Lasker.

What Students Love About Woodbury

Students were asked to draw images in art class that captured what they love about Woodbury.

Those sketches were then shared with the artists who incorporated recurring ideas into the design of the mural.

As artists, Joanne and Bruce brought a broad range of information into the class sessions: art history, the development of mosaics, artist styles, their lives as artists and uses of mosaics.

They explain to the classes how murals came to be and what steps were taken both from a business point of view as well as an artistic reference.

The project is sponsored by the PTO Arts and Enrichment Committee with funding made possible by donations from parents, families and community businesses.
