Girl Scout Silver Award Announced
Sarah LaBelle earns her Silver Award by addressing overcrowding in a local animal shelter.
Middlebury Girl Scout Troop #64171 proudly announces that Sarah LaBelle has earned her Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn and the second highest award in Girl Scouts. Sarah is the daughter of Chris and Margaret LaBelle.
After spending 3 years working her way through the AMAZE journey, Sarah discovered that shelters are crowded because animals don't get adopted. Many animal shelters have limited budgets and aren't able to provide needed comforts to enhance the adoption process. Happy and comfortable people are more likely to linger long enough to bond with an animal and then follow through with an adoption. To make the process more friendly to guests at the animal shelter, Sarah LaBelle reached out to Middlebury Public Works department to request that they put aside any benches that come through the transfer station. Within hours she got a call and went back to pick up a bench in need of re-furbishing. The boards were all rotten through, but the arm supports were solid. Sarah shopped, cut, stained, and drilled the boards to re-build the bench. She delivered it to the Brass City Rescue Alliance in September 2019. The project addressed overcrowding in local animal shelters while upholding a Girl Scout promise of using resources wisely to make the world a better place.
Earning the Silver award puts Sarah among an exceptional group of girls who have used their knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in the world.
