Most Popular Costumes for Halloween This Year

Stores are stocked and waiting for costume shoppers.

If you want to know what costumes will be popular at Halloween each year, just look to recently-released movies.

So says Neal Grieco, 33, the store manager of iParty, a Halloween shop in Danbury. Grieco's store opened three weeks ago as a temporary location, one of several that set up around the area to provide ghoulish garb for area residents ahead of the October holiday.

"Generally the little kids' stuff sells first," Grieco said of costume sales trends. "Then comes the women's. Guy are always at the last minute."

Though it's only temporary, Grieco said his business is swift for that short time period, averaging about an 85 percent sell-through rate on store merchandise.

"We have so many different types of costumes, really nothing usually outweighs the rest," Grieco said. "But if I had to guess, I'd say Pirates of the Carribean will be big. It always is- it's one of our biggest categories of costumes."

Below are Grieco's guesses as to what will be most popular, separated by category:

Men's

  • Green Lantern
  • Thor
  • Captain America
  • Pirates of the Carribean/Jack Sparrow

Women's

  • "Anything sexy," Grieco says. "Sexy women's costumes sell way better than non-sexy."

Girls

  • Cinderella
  • Little Mermaid

Boys

  • Star Wars
  • Smurfs
