The tropical storm in the summer and the October storm resulted in an unexpected number of school cancellations.

Originally, the last day of school, without make-up days, was June 7. The calendar had 11 make-up days built into the planning of the calendar, meaning if Region 15 had 11 weather-related cancellations, the students’ last day would be June 22.

To date, the district used nine make-up days, leaving only two make-up days before either running classes into the last week of June or debiting from spring recess.

The original Board of Education’s calendar states that school closings in excess of 11 days will be made up during the Spring Recess -- April 16 to 20 -- starting with Monday and working toward Friday.

Region 15 Superintendent Frank Sippy received input from the Board of Education and the community, including asking for legislative relief from the state-mandated 180 days, according to the Region 15 website.

He feels the district should not expect legislative relief until Region 15 has exhausted all opportunities, including classes through June 28 and the elimination of Spring recess.
