Residents at The Watermark Compete in National Art Competition

The Watermark at East Hill is pleased to announce that artwork from two of its residents has been selected for consideration in the Watermark Retirement Communities’ national calendar competition.

Artwork from residents Audrey Namowitz and Dr. Richard Howard was selected at the community’s sixth annual juried art show, and will now be sent to the Watermark Retirement Communities national resource center in Tucson, Arizona. Their work will compete with resident work from Watermark’s 32 communities across the country for a spot in the 2014 Watermark Expressions art calendar.

“We are extremely proud of Mrs. Namowitz and Dr. Howard for continuing their love of art, and sharing it with all of us in the community,” said Executive Director Michelle Bettigole. “We wish them the best of luck in the national competition, and hope to see their work in next year’s calendar.”

First Place went to resident Audrey Namowitz for her acrylic painting entitled “Abstraction.”  Mrs. Namowitz is a retired artist and art teacher who served as a photography instructor for Watermark University, a continuing education program at The Watermark at East Hill that offers classes and programs designed to keep seniors’ minds and bodies fit.

Dr. Richard Howard received the 1st Runner Up award for his black and white photograph entitled “Lonesome Gull.” Dr. Howard has been involved with photography since he was a young child, and has received many honors over the years for his work, including having a photo exhibited in the Connecticut State Capitol rotunda. He currently has five photographs on display in the lobby of The Watermark at East Hill, and often exhibits seasonal photography for residents in the community’s auditorium.

National winners will be chosen in the fall, with calendars printed in time for the holidays.
