Self-Insurance Bringing Savings to Middlebury, Southbury and Region 15

This is the first effort by all three parties to pool resource in order to save money.

The Region 15 Public Schools along with the towns of Southbury and Middlebury have been saving money on health insurance premiums since they joined a self-insured plan last year, Bill Bittar reports for the Republican-American.

Under the self-insured plan the school district has saved $1 million in administrative fees, the paper reports. For the self-insured plan, both towns must contribute to a reserve account for medical claims.

The school district and both towns are looking for other ways to pool resources and reduce the burden on taxpayers.
