Waterbury Symphony creates picture project Waterbury

700+ images to be projected above the musicians, in a multimedia portrait as the Symphony performs Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition

The Picture Waterbury Project is a community-led effort to create a multimedia portrait of Greater Waterbury in all of its history and diversity. The project will culminate as more than 700 contributed images are screened at NVCC’s Fine Arts Center during the Symphony’s season finale on April 23 as WSO musicians perform Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

There has long been a connection between sights and sounds – between visual art and music. The WSO will celebrate this connection through a performance of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. "We plan to do the composer one better!" explained Music Director, Leif Bjaland. "Mussorgsky Pictures was inspired by the artwork of his friend, Victor Hartmann, but the music he wrote is powerfully evocative it its own right. We are using it as a springboard for our Picture Waterbury Project. For each section of Pictures at an Exhibition, we will be projecting images, past and present, of Waterbury and the Greater Naugatuck Valley. From the Great Flood of 1955 to the major manufacturing centers to children playing at Quassy Amusement Park, this will be a celebration of our community’s past and present.”

The April 23 program will begin with the Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concerto featuring the brilliant young soloist Claire Huangci.
