The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department loaded 1500 ft of new five-inch fire hose in Truck 1 on Saturday November 16th, completing a five-year program that cost between $15,000 and $20,000. “We really appreciate all the support we received from the Boards of Finance and Fire Commissioners when we first proposed this,” said a happy Chief Janet B. Morgan. “Some of the old hose was from 1992, and we were conscious that replacement was a multi-year plan.”

In all the department trucks have 14,000 feet of firehose of which 7500 feet is the large, five-inch hose. The old hoses met all regular tests but some lengths were starting to spring leaks or wouldn’t hold full pressure, added Chief Morgan. Discarded hoses in good condition are transferred to small rural departments that cannot afford new hose and don’t run the high pressures that Woodbury uses. Hose in poor condition is often cut up for use as boat or ship bumpers on docks, piers, and wharves. ###
