The family and friends of Emily Yip are giving to children fighting cancer. Eight-year-old Emily Yip of Deerfield decided to ask her guest to bring a birthday present to donate to the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. When her birthday party at My Gym in Buffalo Grove was over Emily accumulated more than 60 toys to donate to Treasure Chest Foundation.
Emily’s Mom Amy Chan said “I think the Treasure Chest Foundation is a good cause. When I imagined the kids picking out a toy from the treasure chest, it cheered me up.” Birthday girl Emily tearfully said “I spent my summer in Hong Kong with my Grandpa who died of cancer. I miss my Grandpa.”

“Birthday parties are a time for children to gather up toys. But little Emily decided to give her birthday presents away. More than 60 children fighting cancer will be comforted from her donation of birthday presents. A special thanks to the Yip Family and all of Emily’s friends for the great donation of toys.” said Colleen Kisel, Founder and CEO of the Treasure Chest Foundation.

The POTCF is a non-profit organization that provides comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children and teens diagnosed with cancer by providing a toy, gift or gift certificate in 45 hospitals nationwide. Nowhere else in the nation does such a program exist. CEO Colleen Kisel founded the organization in 1996 after her then seven-year-old son Martin had been diagnosed with leukemia in 1993. Colleen discovered that giving her son a toy after each procedure provided a calming distraction from his pain, noting that when children are diagnosed with cancer their world soon becomes filled with doctors, nurses, chemotherapy drugs, surgeries and seemingly endless painful procedures. Martin recently celebrated his 20th anniversary of remission from the disease.
