HORNETS BATTLE TO TIE WITH MAINE FT. KENT IN HOME FINALE

Dover, Del. (Oct. 16, 2017) --- The Delaware State women’s soccer team scored first, but couldn’t hold the lead, settling instead for a 1-1 tie against Maine Fort Kent in the Hornets’ 2017 home finale at Alumni Stadium Monday afternoon.
DSU opened the scoring when freshman Daijah Norris tallied her second goal of the season in the 24th minute (23:11). A corner kick by Julia Detweiler and perfect pass from Braxton Clark set up the point-blank shot by Norris, who leads the Hornets with two goals and four points.
Delaware State’s advantage held up for more than 44 minutes, but the Bengals battled back to tie the match in the second period.
Maine Fort Kent’s Sherifatu Sumalia fired a shot past Hornet goal keeper Leslie Fazio for an unassisted goal to tie the score in the 68th minute (67:20).
Each team had solid scoring chances in overtime, but failed to convert.
Fazio prevented Maine Fort Kent from scoring the go-ahead goal in the first overtime when she stopped a breakaway shot from 20 yards out by Sumalia early in the first overtime (94th minute).
Less than three minutes later, Delaware State’s Kalyn Fauntleroy missed high on a clear shot from 15 yards away.
In the second overtime, Fauntleroy again missed high on a good look and a late shot by Norris was saved by Bengal goal keeper Valentina Green.
Delaware State outshot Maine Fort Kent 19-15, also holding a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Fazio had four saves for the Hornets, while Green turned away 12 DSU shot attempts in the match.
The Hornets (1-12-2) will wrap up their 2017 schedule at NJIT on Wed. (Oct. 18). The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Newark, N.J.
The tie gives Maine Fort Kent a 9-1-3 record this season.
