Arlington, VA– More than 50 artists will open their studios to the public the weekend of September 26 and 27, organizers announced.
his year will mark the ninth <a href="https://arlingtonartstudiotour.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour</a>, an opportunity for people to meet local artists and learn about their processes. Visitors can view the art of over 50 creative individuals who represent a wide range of styles and media. In addition to painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture, artists in the Arlington area are known for printmaking, photography, papercutting, letterpress, and jewelry. While there will be opportunities for visitors to purchase art, the Tour is foremost a community-building event that encourages visitors to discover and appreciate the artists in their neighborhood. T
The Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour depends on the efforts of independent artists, volunteers, and Arlington visual arts organizations. The 2026 Tour is made possible through the generosity of our sponsors, which include Fred Schnider Investment Group, Gerald &amp; Katherine Freshley, and Palette 22. 
The Tour will publish a guide and map with the names, locations and opening hours of participating artists. Printed copies will be available at community centers, arts venues, and libraries by early September. Those interested can also plan their route online: <a href="https://www.arlingtonartstudiotour.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.arlingtonartstudiotour.org/</a>. Studios in South Arlington will be open Sat., Sept. 26 (11 am – 5 pm), and studios in North Arlington will be open on Sun., Sept. 27 (11 am – 5 pm).
An exhibition at the Barry Gallery (Marymount University) will be presented in conjunction with the Tour from Sept. 3 through Oct. 28. Entitled “Off the Grid,” the show will bring together work by the Tour’s artists, highlighting the talent in our community.

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints Northern Virginia</a> presents: “Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy,” on
 findings, debates and trends in the use of psychedelic substances to 
treat trauma and other conditions, with Whitney Marris, instructor at 
the University at Buffalo’s School of Social Work, certified 
psychedelic-assisted therapy facilitator, and consultant to clinical 
trials.
Psychedelics are rapidly moving from the margins into the mainstream,
 and questions abound as the sociocultural and legal landscapes 
surrounding them shift. President Trump’s recent executive order 
expanding access to psychedelic drugs for certain conditions and 
accelerating research on them has both heightened interest and added to 
confusion.
Learn more about the so-called “Psychedelic Renaissance,” and get 
help separating the hope from the hype surrounding it, with Whitney 
Marris, a leading trainer and facilitator of psychedelic therapy who has
 used it to treat trauma survivors, military veterans, and people with 
cancer.
She’ll present foundational information on what we know about how 
psychedelics work. You’ll learn how psychedelic-assisted therapy differs
 from “trip sitting” and about what we know about the effects of 
“microdosing” versus “macrodosing.” We’ll examine what has been 
demonstrated to be helpful versus harmful before, during, and after a 
dosing session intended to support significant, sustainable change.
Marris also will discuss the historical and cultural context of the 
use of psychedelic medicines for healing, and she’ll describe the 
ethical challenges that arise as such practices move from counterculture
 to clinic. We’ll look at emerging and evolving findings in the field, 
as well as at the roles being played by various financial interests and 
ideologies in determining the direction of psychedelic-assisted therapy 
and research on its outcomes.
Attendees will gain an awareness of the need for new professional 
standards and regulatory guardrails related to such work, and they’ll 
leave knowing key questions to ask potential providers of

 on famous fakes and their real impact, with Vanessa R. Corcoran, 
Catholic Church and medieval historian and director of Catholic Studies 
at Georgetown University.
Today people often discuss fraud and forgery as if they are uniquely 
modern problems—the products of the internet, artificial intelligence, 
and the rise of deepfakes. But the impulse to deceive by fabricating 
evidence, identities, or images is far older than any digital 
technology. Moreover, even those who did not get away with it for long 
sometimes altered the course of history with their trickery.
Learn in depth about such deceptions during an evening of mythmaking 
and myth-busting with Dr. Vanessa R. Corcoran, previously has given 
excellent Profs and Pints on Catholic history and culture and the 2025 
papal conclave.
She’ll walk you through a series of forgeries tied to the Crusades, 
the Catholic Church, and the Byzantine Empire, especially focusing on 
fakery that confounded the medieval world. You’ll learn about cases 
involving forged documents, imitated signatures, counterfeited money, 
bogus works of art, and imposters in disguise.
We’ll look at how Roman artists in antiquity created sculptures that 
they attempted to pass off as Greek works to increase marketability. 
(Even Michelangelo was guilty of trying to disguise one of his 
sculptures as a work from the classical era.) Later on, Dutch painter 
Han Van Meegeren created numerous forgeries of Vermeer’s paintings, 
ultimately getting convicted of fraud and forgery.
Among acts of deception that changed the course of history was a 
medieval forgery titled “The Donation of Constantine,” which as of the 
late 700s was used to buttress claims that the fourth-century Byzantine 
Emperor Constantine I had transferred authority over Rome to the Pope. 
It was viewed as authentic until fifteenth-century Renaissance humanist 
Lorenzo Valla debunked it as created centuries after Constantine died.
A popular legend in the Catholic Church held that a woman later known
 as “Pope Joan” disguised herself as a man and ruled as “popess” in the 
ninth century. That narrative, largely debunked by modern historians, 
was treated by medieval chronicles as credible and used to buttress 
arguments that women should be ordained as priests.
Among other cases we’ll examine include the Shroud of Turin, 
purported to be the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth, which was 
denounced as forgery as early as 1389 but remains venerated as a relic 
by some believers.
Dr. Corcoran’s talk will offer an important lens for understanding 
the challenges and stakes of today’s debates over AI-generated fakery. 
You’ll walk away with an appreciation of how every generation has had to
 learn, often painfully, how to distinguish what merely looks authentic

With the approach of any major election comes the emergence of 
pollsters, pundits and, yes, even professors who claim to know how the 
voting will go. Few of them explain how they reached their conclusions, 
even if they conflict with the predictions of others.
Profs and Pints is bringing you a talk to help you see through the 
spin, wishful thinking, and wild guesses about the 2026 midterm 
elections.&nbsp;
Professor Matthew Green, a scholar of congressional and electoral 
politics, will pull back the curtain to show you the tools that 
political scientists and professional prognosticators use in forecasting
 election outcomes. He will discuss some of the common misconceptions 
about what influences the vote, and he will review the strengths and 
weaknesses of various predictive models and the assumptions that lie 
behind each of them.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Professor Green also will examine several factors unique to this 
year's elections, including the impacts of mid-decade redistricting and 
the public's views of President Trump. He will discuss why many models 
predict that Democrats will gain seats in both the House and Senate but 
assign a lower probability of the Democrats winning control of the 
Senate than gaining a majority in the House.

Most of us think in terms of either burial or cremation in considering what we’d like done to our bodies when we die. But in other times and places practices such as mummification, funerary cannibalism, and even the offering of bodies to hungry vultures all have been regarded as perfectly normal ways of tending to the dead.
Learn about the remarkable variety of ways humans have dealt with the deceased with Dr. Jordan Wilson, a bioarchaeologist who gives excellent Profs and Pints talks.&nbsp;
She’ll discuss how funerary traditions reflect religious beliefs, social identities, environmental realities, and practical concerns. Her talk will cover everything from Tibetan sky burials to modern green burials, human composting, and the mummies of ancient Egypt, Peru, and Chile.
We’ll explore the science of decomposition and visit the handful of research facilities around the world dedicated to studying it. We’ll also consider the evolutionary origins of grief and mourning, examining evidence that these behaviors are not unique to humans and can be observed in species such as elephants and chimpanzees.
Dr. Wilson also will trace the surprising history of burial and cemeteries, discussing evidence of possible mortuary practices among Homo naledi and Neanderthals and examining the Paris Catacombs and Arlington National Cemetery.&nbsp;
You’ll learn how the ways that people treat the dead reveal not only how they confront mortality, but also how they define community, memory, and what it means to be human.
