Report: State Department Confirms Death of GW Student

Nick Upton, a junior at George Washington University, has died after he went missing while on a study abroad trip to South Africa.

Nicholas Upton, the George Washington University student who went missing from his study abroad program in South Africa earlier this week, has died, according to WTOP.

A state department spokesman confirmed the news to WTOP on Monday.

Upton was last seen swimming in the East Cape Province on Sunday night at 10:30 p.m., according to local CBS affiliate WUSA.

“Our study abroad program partner in Cape Town, South Africa has notified GW that one of our students traveling during a break in the program is missing,” said Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski in a statement released by the university earlier this week.

Upton was a member of GW’s men’s rowing team, and a brother of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity on campus. He was junior at the university.
