Bowser OKs $2.3M To Expand DC Coronavirus Contact Tracing Force
Mayor Muriel Bowser increases spending on contact tracing as the total number of coronavirus cases in the District rises to 6,495.
WASHINGTON, DC — On Monday, Mayor Muriel Bowser directed $2.3 million of the District’s Contingency Cash Reserve Fund to pay for the initial staffing hires for the D.C. Department of Health's D.C. Coronavirus Contact Trace Force. D.C. Health started onboarding 17 contact tracers to help identify individuals exposed to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus.
As part of the first phase of the Contact Trace Force expansion, the District expects to hire 200 candidates in three positions:
- 10 – Supervisors
- 40 – Case Investigators
- 150 – Investigators (Contact Tracers)
Eventually, D.C. Health will staff up to a total of 900 Contact Force Employees, as part of the District's coronavirus response and recovery efforts.

D.C. Health confirmed eight new deaths Tuesday due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of coronavirus deaths in the District to 336.
D.C. Health also confirmed 96 new positive COVID-19 cases, bringing the overall total to 6,495.

The new deaths in the District are described as:
- 56-year-old male
- 82-year-old male
- 82-year-old female
- 83-year-old male
- 84-year-old male
- 93-year-old female
- 94-year-old female
- 94-year-old female
D.C. Health has confirmed 30,261 District residents have been tested for the coronavirus and 881 have recovered. Contact tracing investigations are focused positive cases tied to health care workers and first responders, senior care facilities, correctional and detention centers, child care facilities and facilities serving homeless individuals.

Globally, more than 4.2 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and over 287,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Tuesday morning. In the United States, more than 1.3 million people have been infected and over 80,000 people have died from COVID-19.
