Through dramatic changes to scale, adding repurposed objects, and other transformations, Pascual created works that urge viewers to see everyday imagery from a new perspective.

In the 1980s, the Reagan Administration was reinstating the Selective Service, hippies were turning into yuppies, and the punk scene rose as a reaction to what they saw as a conformist, soulless government. While punk is often associated with London, New York, and LA, there was a substantial scene in DC that had anchors in downtown and elsewhere. The original 9:30 Club and other spaces were the venues where bands like Minor Threat and Bad Brains got started before going on to world renown. On this tour, you'll discover what made the DC punk culture distinct from others, the major contributors to the scene, and its lasting impact on the local music scene today. Tour begins outside of the F and 7th Street Exit of Gallery Place Metro Station (red, green, and yellow lines) and ends at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street NW DC. The Hannah Marks Quartet features Marks on bass, Jonathan Paik on keyboard, Mark Valdes on drums and Max Light on guitar. Earlier that day, Marks will join "ASCAP FOUNDATION CONVERSATION: NEXT VOICES," a free "Meet The Artists" discussion at DC's Arena Stage. She will also be a featured guest on "VERSED: The ASCAP Podcast" in August.
Marks, recognized on DownBeat magazine's 2026 Critic's Poll Rising Star Bassist list, is a bassist, composer and educator living in New York City. She leads a risk-taking acoustic jazz quartet and has showcased her music at the Detroit Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, 80-35 Music Festival, Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival and Indy Jazz Festival.
Produced by Jason Moran, her second album, Feed the Fire, was released in June 2026 on Endectomorph. Marks' debut album, Outsider, Outlier (2023), is an explosive rendering of her search for belonging and empowerment. Citizen Jazz called it "…a very mature record from a young artist with very strong ideas who does not hold back anything." Trumpeter Marcus Printup has praised her "fresh, modern, and original approach to playing the bass."
Marks tours internationally with NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater's project "We Exist!" and has performed with Geoffrey Keezer, Nasheet Waits, Terri Lyne Carrington, Anna Webber, Miles Okazaki, Ingrid Jensen, Kalia Vandever, Matt Wilson, Ted Nash, Morgan Guerin, Marcus Printup and Sasha Berliner. Her discography includes Geoffrey Keezer's Grammy-winning "Refuge," Amanda Ekery's Grammy-nominated Arabé, Kristen Lee Sergeant's Falling, and Heartland Trio's Year One.
The Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards
The Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards were established by The ASCAP Foundation in 2002 to encourage gifted jazz composers up to the age of 30. The program carries the name of trumpeter and ASCAP member Herb Alpert, recognizing The Herb Alpert Foundation's multi-year financial commitment to this unique program. Recipients, who receive cash awards, are selected through a juried national competition.

Emerging NYC Jazz Composer, Bassist And Educator Hannah Marks To Perform At DC Jazz Festival On Sept

Come on a winding journey through an era in which the U Street neighborhood of Washington, DC was giving rise to a vibrant jazz scene and establishing the roots of a new movement in black intellectualism.
Also known as "Black Broadway", the U Street corridor was where the big names in jazz came to play at one of the dozens of clubs and theaters, and hobnob with writers and thinkers such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alain Locke. Tour begins at the historic Howard Theater at 620 T Street NW and ends at the corner of S and 15th Street NW. The tour also makes a halfway stop at the famous Ben's Chili Bowl for a bathroom break and optional refreshment.

Alfred Yun is a Korean-American jazz pianist and composer. His music is influenced by his upbringing in both Korea and the United States. You can hear influences ranging from jazz, hip hop, and K-Pop to traditional Korean music in Alfred Yun’s compositions.  
Alfred was honored to be chosen by the Music Center At Strathmore as an Artist-in-Residence for the 2023-2024 season. This includes featured concerts at Strathmore’s prestigious AMP club in January and participating in programs throughout the season. In 2026, Alfred Yun was selected to be part of the Jazz and Sonic Arts: Improvised Music Residency at the Banff Centre for Art and Creativity.&nbsp; 
 In 2025, Alfred Yun released his album, Voice and Phenomenon, which investigates the different ways we use the voice — gibberish, games, poems, singing, spoken word, laughter, and more. The album invites the listener into an intimate account of these disparate voices and sounds. It is the most personal and revealing work of his career. Voice and Phenomenon was listed on Capital Bop's Top DC Jazz Albums of 2025.
