🚨 Urgent: Community members - Adopters and fosters are needed to save 15 dogs on the latest urgent list by Tuesday, 5/5.&nbsp;They all need to be adopted or have rescue commitment, and have to leave the shelter by Tuesday (or after spay/neuter.) If no one saves them, they will be euthanized due to being over capacity.&nbsp; As of 4/30 PM: Up to 15 dogs need adopters and fosters! Dakota may have placement. Check for updates at the Facebook link.&nbsp;&nbsp;
🐶&nbsp;Adopters:&nbsp;Please go to the shelter today between&nbsp;11am to 7pm (arrive by 5:30pm or no later than 6pm).&nbsp;Adopters are able to meet 2 dogs and bring dogs for meet and greets. If anyone is going to adopt them, please comment on their pages in the linked album.
New Tip: Adopters of pit bulls and pit bull mixes: Review the new requirements and complete the&nbsp;Pet Parenting Certification (that takes about an hour)&nbsp;before going to adopt&nbsp;Pit Bull Terriers&nbsp;and specific bully-type breeds. Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko, praised for his “precipitous muscularity and high spirits” (New York Classical Review), comes to Washington Performing Arts with electrifying artistry and a program of epic scope at Sixth &amp; I. The evening opens with Beethoven’s monumental “Hammerklavier” Sonata, followed by the dark lyricism of Ukrainian composer Borys Lyatoshinsky’s Three Preludes, Op. 38. Kholodenko concludes with a virtuosic flourish: Liszt’s original Six Paganini Études, a breathtaking showcase of pianistic brilliance that has long been a hallmark of Kholodenko’s playing.

Reserved Seating: Washington Performing Arts Subscribers will have a reserved section of preferred seating on the main sanctuary level. Display screens supplement sightlines. Seating within each level is offered on a first-come basis.

In celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, come to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian to meet chef and author Sheldon Simeon to celebrate the release of his second cookbook, Ohana Style (Clarkson Potter, 2026), which honors the spirit of family and hospitality through a collection of deeply personal recipes and stories. Born and raised in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Simeon draws inspiration from his Filipino heritage, local upbringing, and the multi-ethnic flavors that define Hawaiian cuisine. Thursday, May 7, 11 AM–2 PM.

In the spirit of ohana, Executive Chef Alex Strong of the Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe will showcase a vibrant menu inspired by the cookbook. Enjoy Huli Huli chicken, lemon caper mahi-mahi, sweet and sour beet mui, crispy chili-garlic cauliflower, teriyaki potatoes, mac salad, and a refreshing mango-ade cooler.
Copies of Ohana Style will be available for purchase and signing. Come meet the chef, get your book signed, and experience island-inspired flavors.

Arlington Language School Marks 40th Anniversary

ICA Language Services (ICA), a family-owned, woman-led small business based in Arlington, is celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking decades of supporting the U.S. military and diplomatic community through language training and testing. Founded in April 1986 as Inlingua Foreign Language Center, a 6-classroom language school, ICA expanded under the leadership of Deidre Doyle, an entrepreneur with a background in organizational management who joined the company the same year. As a military spouse, she had developed a deep understanding of military organizations and culture, helping shape ICA into a trusted provider of language training and testing for military professionals. Doyle became a partner in 1993 and sole owner in 2009, when she changed the name to ICA Language Services. Today, ICA operates a 60+ classroom schoolhouse in Rosslyn and has delivered nearly five million hours of language instruction and more than 30,000 language assessments across 120+ languages. ICA also provides training on military bases throughout the US and abroad. The company is now led by President and CEO Lexie Casey, Doyle’s daughter, who joined ICA in 2009 after a decade in government contracting. Casey became a partner in 2014 and assumed day-to-day leadership in 2015, when Doyle transitioned to Chair of the Board. ICA has employed more than 1,300 individuals from 131 countries, often providing a first job in the United States for language professionals.
