Barracks Row Main Street proudly presents its first-ever Watermelon Festival, a fun-filled community celebration featuring live watermelon sculpture carving, DMV Drumline performances, and live music by the Too Much Talent Band. Guests can also enjoy Compliments Only Sub Shop’s exciting Cannoli Eating Contest alongside summer activities, local vendors, and plenty of watermelon-themed fun for all ages.

We're kicking off the series with a special appearance from local author Marisa Kashino, author of Best Offer Wins. Join curator Anya Montiel (Mestiza/Tohono O'odham descent) showing a closer look at the museum’s special installation Making a Statement, which demonstrates how Native women combine traditional design elements with modern military symbolism to demonstrate cultural pride and honor military service. The installation features a historical Lakota beaded dress decorated with elaborate patriotic American imagery and a jingle dress made by members of the Native American Women Warriors to show pride in their Indigenous heritage and to emphasize the role of Native women in the military. Get hands-on to learn more about beadwork, jingle cones, and other design elements related to Native dressmaking in the museum’s Teaching Collection.

Enjoy a peaceful afternoon exploring this traditional art by making your own mala to take home with you, or add your creation to our collection for sale in the gift shop.A mala is a string of beads used to count prayers or mantra recitations. This is a simple practice that easily connects us with the good qualities of all enlightened beings, and helps us to realize our highest potential. For Buddhist practitioners, their mala is a very precious and meaningful object.This workshop is suitable for everyone, whether you are an experienced practitioner or a complete beginner. Work at your own pace and receive guidance from experienced assistants while enhancing your knowledge of the various types of malas and how to make them in a qualified manner according to the New Kadampa lineage.After everyone has completed making their malas, in the final session, you will receive a mantra to recite and learn how to use and bless your mala.Registration: Please pre-register so we can ensure there are enough materials for everyone, space is limited!
