Capitals Player To Skip White House Visit If He Wins Cup: Report

Devante Smith-Pelly slammed President Trump as "racist and sexist."

WASHINGTON, DC -- If the Washington Capitals manage to win the Stanley Cup against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, one player reportedly doesn't plan on attending the traditional White House visit.

Devante Smith-Pelly, who has six goals in this playoff run, did not outright say he wouldn't attend but certainly seemed to imply it when asked by reporters.

"The things that he spews are straight-up racist and sexist," Canada's Postmedia quoted Smith-Pelly as saying Wednesday. "Some of the things he's said are pretty gross. I'm not too into politics, so I don't know all his other views, but his rhetoric I definitely don't agree with. It hasn't come up here, but I think I already have my mind made up."

The comments come shortly after a controversy involving Trump and the NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles. After only a handful of Eagles announced plans to visit the White House, Trump retaliated by cancelling the event and instead holding a "Celebration of America" -- which lasted only a few minutes and involved singing patriotic songs.

The incident was similar to a clash last year between Trump and the Golden State Warriors. When the team suggested they wouldn't attend after winning the NBA championship, Trump disinvited them. And with the Warriors on the cusp of another championship with a 3-0 lead over Cleveland, star player Steph Curry has already said they won't visit the White House.

The Capitals currently lead the Stanley Cup Finals three games to one, meaning they only have to win one of the remaining three games to clinch the Stanley Cup. They play Thursday night in Las Vegas. Should they fail to clinch then, the series will swing back to D.C. on Sunday night, and then back to Vegas Wednesday night should a seventh game be necessary.
