DC Construction Worker Trapped as Trench Collapses; Now Presumed Dead

D.C. Fire and EMS are in the midst of an extensive recovery operation in the Wesley Heights neighborhood of Northwest.

WASHINGTON, DC — Emergency personnel were working frantically to rescue a worker trapped in a trench collapse at a construction site in Northwest, but it has now been deemed a "recovery situation."

D.C. Fire and EMS tweeted at 10:09 a.m. that there had been a construction accident with a person trapped due to a collapse in the 4600 block of Dexter Street NW.

D.C. Fire and EMS added that the trench was "very unstable," and that rescue personnel were beginning shoring operations to prop up the trench and "prevent further collapse."

At around 1 p.m., Fire Chief John Donnelly informed the gathered media that it was now a "recovery situation," and rescue workers would remain on the scene until the victim was recovered.
