WASHINGTON, DC — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was declared the winner of Tuesday's Democratic Primary by the Associated Press. By 9:02 p.m., nearly 78,000 votes had been counted, with a 19 percent turnout, according to unofficial results.

Bowser, 49, defeated At-Large Councilmember Robert White and Councilmember Trayon White, who represents Ward 8, according to AP. She will run against Republican challenger Stacia R. Hall, who ran unopposed in Tuesday's primary.

Eleanor Holmes Norton, the District's delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, was also declared a winner by The Washington Post. She defeated challengers Wendy "Hope Dealer" Hamilton and Kelly Mikel Williams.

Bowser faced a tough challenge for a third term, according to the Associated Press, but fended off two council members in a race dominated by crime and public safety issues.

Her second term saw Bowser in the national spotlight as she clashed with former President Donald Trump and walked a public tightrope between her own police department and a vocal coalition of activists led by Black Lives Matter.

During the campaign, Councilman Robert White criticized Bowser’s response to rising violent crime rates, as did Councilmember Trayon White, who represents Ward 8, the poorest and most crime-ridden area in the district.

In response, Bowser promised to increase the size of the DC police force and to maintain mayoral control of the District’s public schools, The Washington Post reported.

Incumbent D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson won his race against challenger Erin Palmer. The position is one of the most powerful in the city and is responsible for drafting the budget, the Post said.

On Tuesday, D.C. voters cast their votes in races for delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives; shadow representative for the U.S. House; mayor, chairman of the D.C. City Council, at-large member of the D.C. Council; members of the D.C. Council in wards 1, 3, 5, and 6; and the D.C. attorney general.
