DC Firefighters Rescue Kittens From 3-Story Apartment Fire
D.C. Fire and EMS personnel rescued three kittens Monday evening from a fire in the basement of a three-story apartment building.

WASHINGTON, DC -- D.C. Fire and EMS units responded Monday evening to a box alarm in the 3300 block of Stanton Road, S.E. Although no one was injured, one person was displaced and three kittens were rescued from the fire.
Units were dispatched Dec. 30, shortly after 6 p.m., to a fire in a three-story apartment building at 3325 Stanton Road, S.E.
"We found a fire in the basement apartment, which we were able to quickly extinguish without extending any further," said Vito Maggiolo, public information officer for D.C. Fire and EMS. "We had one individual, an occupant of that apartment who was displaced."

Firefighters also found three kittens in a box, which they removed outside for safety.
"They were eventually turned over to Human Rescue," Maggiolo said. "They were going to take them and have them checked out by a veterinarian. They appeared to be fine."

The cause of the fire is currently listed as undetermined.
