DC A Top Contender For Amazon's 2nd Headquarters: Report

A Wall Street Journal report ranks D.C. in third place, behind only Dallas and Boston.

WASHINGTON, DC -- D.C. is a top contender for Amazon's second headquarters, a $5 billion project that would bring 50,000 jobs to the area, according to a report.

The Wall Street Journal has released a new set of rankings on the cities most appealing to Amazon, and D.C. ranked third on the list, behind Dallas and Boston.

D.C. earned high marks for the its number of tech workers, its highly educated population, a good local economy, a diverse population, and high quality of life. The city's high cost of living and tax rates were a negative, although D.C. likely would offer lucrative tax incentives to get around that issue.

Dallas benefits from not having a state income tax. Boston, on the other hand, has a booming millennial population, according to the report.

The battle for Amazon's second headquarters is a fierce one, as a total of 238 proposals have been filed across the North America.

Of course, it's hard to put too much stock into rankings like these. For example, the New York Times in September claimed that Denver was the city most likely to land Amazon's second headquarters, but the Mile High City finished behind five cities in the Wall Street Journal's rankings: Dallas, Boston, D.C., Atlanta, and Chicago.
