DC Weather: District Schools Closing/Delay Policy Explained

With an inch of snow possible in the D.C. area, schools could be delayed or even cancelled on Friday.

WASHINGTON, DC — Prepare for the apocalypse: the D.C. area is projected to get buried under an inch of snow Thursday evening. Although it's iffy at this point, it's possible that schools in D.C. will be delayed or even cancelled. As a result, it's a good idea to brush up on the weather cancellation procedures and policies for your area.

The D.C. Public Schools website says they "strive to keep DCPS schools open whenever possible," and are reluctant to close. They make a decision to close based on road safety, sidewalk safety and meal availability.

DCPS encourages parents to ultimately decide on whether their child goes to school even if schools remain open.

Parents will be notified of a decision whether to close the school between 4 and 5 a.m. on the morning of the possible delay or closure. The best way to find out is to check the DCPS Twitter account @dcpublicschools, or to visit the website at dcps.dc.gov.
