Washington, D.C. — June 5, 2025 — In honor of World Environment Day, the Founding Church of Scientology of Washington, D.C. held a special Open House event, inviting community members, educators, activists, and civic leaders to explore meaningful solutions to the moral and social decline affecting both the nation and the local D.C. area.

The event, hosted by Master of Ceremonies Chas Smith, addressed a wide range of pressing issues—from rising crime and environmental degradation to the erosion of personal integrity and community values.

“We are faced with a deepening moral crisis, not only in the world at large but right here in our own neighborhoods,” said Smith. “But today we focus on what we can do about it.”

The Open House spotlighted The Way to Happiness, a secular, common-sense moral code written by L. Ron Hubbard, consisting of 21 precepts aimed at restoring trust, decency, and ethical behavior in society. The Church presented its global humanitarian efforts and showcased audiovisual tools, including award-winning Public Service Announcements and excerpts from the book-on-film version of The Way to Happiness.

In his address, Smith highlighted sobering statistics:

  • D.C.’s homicide rate in 2023 reached a 20-year high at 274 murders, placing it among the top five major U.S. cities for violent crime.
  • Chronic absenteeism among D.C. middle schoolers now exceeds 30%, with some schools surpassing 50% truancy.
  • Nearly 70% of arrested individuals in 2022 were not prosecuted, contributing to public disillusionment with the justice system.

Amid these challenges, the Church’s outreach efforts are making a measurable impact. Through partnerships with groups like YaaY Me!, Inc., led by Dr. Warees Majeed, more than 350 community events and 200 local partnerships have helped reduce violent crime by 7%. Additionally, over 175,000 Way to Happiness booklets have been distributed to D.C. residents in 2025 alone.

“The Way to Happiness offers a practical roadmap anyone can follow to live a more ethical and fulfilling life,” Smith emphasized. “We’re seeing real results—crime is down, community engagement is up, and hope is being restored.”

Attendees were introduced to free Educator’s Packages, which include curricula and multimedia tools for use in schools, businesses, and correctional facilities. Complimentary training programs were also offered to help organizations implement the program in their communities.

The event concluded with a call to action: for attendees to take part in the growing movement to promote values-based education and moral renewal in Washington, D.C.
