• Here are the new laws going into effect in Maryland, DC and Virginia on Oct. 1 (fox5dc.com) — Starting today, Washington, D.C. residents face big changes, including reduced paid family leave benefits, a new high school attendance incentive paying some students $50 weekly, and a citywide prescription drug discount card usable even without insurance. The piece also outlines new rodent-resistant trash rules for public schools and parks, plus major law changes in neighboring Maryland and Virginia.
   

• 2 charged with murder after man killed in shooting near DC's Meridian Hill Park (dcnewsnow.com) — Police have arrested and charged two Northwest D.C. men with premeditated first-degree murder in the August 4 shooting that killed 23-year-old Xavier Fogle near Meridian Hill Park. Officers found Fogle fatally wounded on 15th Street NW just before 4:30 a.m., and detectives later identified and arrested the suspects, though their relationship to the victim remains unclear.
   

• Court blocks government from carving Trump's name into Institute of Peace building (washingtontimes.com) — A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. has temporarily blocked plans to carve President Trump's name into the U.S. Institute of Peace headquarters, questioning government assurances that no engraving was imminent. The dispute is part of a broader fight over Trump's efforts to reshape prominent D.C. landmarks, including the Kennedy Center, White House grounds, and East Potomac Park golf course.
