How To Dispose Of Your Christmas Tree In DC

There are two free options for getting rid of your holiday tree now that the season is over in the District.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Sadly, Christmastime is over, and that means it's time to get rid of that Christmas tree in your living room.

But don't just throw it in the dumpster. Christmas trees can be recycled, says the D.C. Department of Public Works, and you have two options for doing that -- both free of charge.

The first is to bring your trees and other greenery to the District's transfer stations located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive NE and 3200 Benning Road NE.

The second option is to put your trees and greenery where trash and recycling is collected between Jan. 13 and Feb. 2. DPW will do the rest for you.

“The District is committed to waste reduction year-round, including the holiday season,” said DPW Director Christopher Shorter in a statement. “These two options ensure residents can dispose of their holiday trees and greenery in an environmentally friendly and convenient way.”

Remember to remove all ornaments and lights first, and don't bag trees or greenery.

Last year, DPW collected and composed 327.25 tons of holiday trees.
