Huge $900 Million Renovation Coming To Air & Space Museum Next Summer: Report

The seven-year renovation will result in a major change to the building's appearance, but it will remain open to the public during the work.

WASHINGTON, DC -- The National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall is about to get a huge makeover next summer, and all without having to close to visitors.

Beginning in the summer of 2018, the museum will undergo a seven-year, $900 million renovation that will involve totally changing the exterior, adding some new entrance structures, and updating 23 galleries, according to a DCist report.

The National Air and Space Museum was the second-most visited museum in the world last year, and it has hosted 350 million visitors since it opened in 1976. Only the National Museum of China had more visitors in 2016, with 7.55 million last year compared to 7.5 million visitors for the National Air and Space Museum, which even beat out The Louvre (7.4 million).
