Huge 'Olympic Day DC' to Take Over Downtown This Friday

The District is taking part in a worldwide celebration of the Olympics in advance of the upcoming games in Rio.

The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will soon be upon us, and this Friday the District will have its own special celebration of the occasion at CityCenterDC.

Events DC is hosting Olympic Day DC on Friday, June 24, which will "showcase interactive sports experiences for residents to enjoy," according to a statement.

"Olympic Day DC will feature local athlete appearances and interactive sports experiences from pole vaulting and power lifting to wrestling, boxing, fencing and Paralympic basketball," the statement adds. "The event is designed to educate and excite local residents and visitors, while promoting the ideals of the Olympic movement. This event is one of more than 2,000 Olympic Day events taking place nationwide during the month of June, supported by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and around the world."

More than 160 countries participate in this annual celebration, which was created back in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympics and seeks to promote Olympic values like fair play, sportsmanship and respect.

The event runs from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at CityCenterDC or The Park at CityCenter, which is at I Street between 10th and 11th streets. The best way to get there is via the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, or you can get off at Metro Center.
