LGBTQ Nonprofit Raising Money To Keep DC Shelter Beds Open

WASHINGTON, DC — The founder of LGBTQ nonprofit Casa Ruby in Washington, D.C., is seeking the public’s help after receiving a sudden notice from the D.C. government that funding for key operations will not be renewed.

Casa Ruby will be closing a critical program on Oct. 1: the organization's low barrier beds, which act as a free shelter at night and during weather emergencies. Without this program, many people who are homeless could have a harder time finding shelter when they need it.

“This is not only a great loss to the DMV area but now we have lost a national resource that welcomes hundreds of vulnerable clients who seeks refuge from violence every year,” Corado said.

Casa Ruby is the only LGBTQ bilingual and multicultural organization in the D.C. area providing social services and programs. The organization’s services range from emergency housing to non-medical case management.
