A-List Celebrities Pack White House for President Obama Farewell Bash

Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Usher were joined by many other stars to wish the outgoing president well after eight years in office.

WASHINGTON, DC — The White House is the place to see and be seen. That's always been true, but now more than ever as celebrities headed to the White House in droves to send off President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle in style over the weekend.

Meryl Streep, Usher, Tom Hanks and John Legend were just a few of the names to attend the farewell celebration on Friday night, according to numerous news reports.

Solange Knowles, who performed at the event, said the experience was the "sound check of life" in a post on Instagram.

"Was truly the ultimate, ultimate honor. Can’t even put into words. Really," she said. "We will miss your excellence, your grace, and the phenomenal legacy you have let us all share."

It's an event not likely to be seen again at the White House for a while, especially considering incoming President-elect Donald Trump's huge unpopularity with celebrities, something that he and his supporters have taken pride in. Organizers of the Inauguration Day celebration coming up on Jan. 20 have struggled to find people willing to perform, and Hollywood legend Meryl Streep slammed Trump in her Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement acceptance speech at the Golden Globes over the weekend, prompting Trump to lash out.
