Man Shot In Officer-Involved Shooting In Northwest DC (UPDATES)

A man was shot in an officer-involved shooting in Park View Wednesday night after he refused to put down his gun, police said.

(Updated at 2:25 p.m. Thursday) WASHINGTON, DC — A man was shot in an officer-involved shooting in the Park View neighborhood of Northwest DC Wednesday night, police said. (Subscribe to DC Patch for all local news.)

Kenneth Burley, 28, of Southeast Washington, has non-life-threatening injuries following the shooting where he failed to lower his handgun, police said.

The shooting occurred at about 10:20 p.m. when police saw Burley holding a handgun in the 700 block of Park Road Northwest, police said. Police immediately told Burley to drop his gun, but he allegedly ignored the demands and raised his gun toward the officer speaking to him, police said.

The officer fired his weapon and struck Burley. Burley then fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by officers. Pursuant to department policy, the officer who shot Burley was placed on administrative leave, police said.

DC has strict gun laws that restrict concealed-carry permits. To obtain a permit for carry concealed firearms, applicants must complete a 16-hour safety course and a two hour training course at a gun range. Applicants also must provide a good reason for carrying a gun.

The shooting occurred in the 700 block of Newton Place, NW. The shooting was reported just before 11 p.m.

The man shot is conscious and breathing, police said.
