Marine Shot Dead At Barracks In Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A U.S. Marine was reportedly shot dead on the grounds of a barracks in Washington, D.C., on New Year's Day. The circumstances surrounding the shooting weren't immediately available, but the U.S. Marine Corps said in a release that the marine, who was on duty at the time, died around 5 a.m. from a gunshot wound.
Metropolitan police officers were sent to the scene in the southeastern section of the city and an investigation is ongoing, the release said. There is no threat to residents in the area.
Col. Don Tomich, commanding officer of the barracks said the command's priority is to take care of the marine's family and friends.

"We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time," he said.
The marine's name wasn't immediately released.
