National Merit Semifinalists: Dozens Named From DC Schools

See the 46 students from D.C. Public Schools named National Merit Semifinalists. Winners will be announced in spring 2017.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced the 16,000 semifinalists for its 62nd annual scholarship program, and dozens of names from D.C. schools are on it.

These students will compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million to be offered next spring, according to a statement from the corporation. Semifinalists must fulfill multiple requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition, and about 90 percent of those semifinalists are expected to pass, with half of them winning a National Merit Scholarship.

The 2017 competition featured about 1.6 million entries at more than 22,000 high schools. The field of semifinalists represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors.

"To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received," the statement notes. "A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test."
