National Press Club to Host Controversial Pro-Trump 'DeploraBall'

Organizers had gotten into a fight with an Arlington venue over hosting the event, leading to threats and the involvement of local police.

WASHINGTON, DC — The "DeploraBall" has finally found a home: the National Press Club in downtown D.C.

The organizers of the pro-Donald Trump party, a reference to Hillary Clinton's remark that his supporters belong in a "basket of deplorables," had been looking for a place to host the event ever since being rebuffed by the Clarendon Ballroom in nearby Arlington. The venue was flooded with threatening messages by Trump supporters after it decided against hosting the gathering. Organizers had already gone ahead and started selling tickets, and lashed out after hearing the news over Twitter.

Now it appears the National Press Club will host the event, which is likely to include more than a few white supremacists -- a major part of the reason why the group had difficulty finding a spot. DeploraBall organizers complained on their website that they were being unfairly singled out by D.C.-area establishments.

"In 2016, Americans in favor of competent, America-first leadership were insulted, harassed, and assaulted for holding views contrary to those of the bicoastal, bipartisan 'elites,'" they say on their website. "Despite overwhelming cultural opposition, a groundswell of Americans rose up together to embrace these labels (especially 'Deplorables') to meme our way to the Whitehouse [sic] and elect Donald Trump."

An organizer of the party tweeted earlier this week that the event had been sold out. It will be held on Jan. 19.
