National Zoo Reopens With Timed Entries To View Giant Panda Cub

Viewing of the National Zoo's newest giant panda cub, Xiao Qi Ji, will be limited and will require a separate free timed-entry pass.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Zoo, part of the Smithsonian, reopened to the public Friday after closing last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the zoo remains free, all Smithsonian institutions, including the National Zoo, will require timed-entry passes to monitor capacity limits and to help with social distancing.

Viewing of the National Zoo’s newest giant panda cub, Xiao Qi Ji, will be limited for social distancing purposes and will require a separate free timed-entry pass. Visitors can reserve Asia Trail/Panda Passes onsite at eight giant panda statue kiosks located throughout the zoo.

Xiao Qi Ji, who was born Aug. 21, 2020, tends to be active early in the morning and early afternoon. At this age, he takes frequent naps and his activities may vary from day to day. Giant pandas prefer their cooled indoor habitats when temperatures rise in the summer, according to the zoo.

Zoo visitors ages two and older are required to wear a face covering in all indoor spaces. Fully vaccinated visitors are not required to wear a face covering outdoors. Face coverings may be removed while eating or drinking in designated spaces
