Northwestern Mutual DC hosts concert fundraiser for childhood cancer
The event raised donations to fund 1,400 hours of childhood cancer research through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation
WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 19, 2024 – Last week, Northwestern Mutual Washington, D.C. hosted its fifth annual “Storytellers: The Tales Behind the Tunes” event to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a leading organization for funding research, raising awareness and supporting families affected by childhood cancer. This year’s event has raised nearly $70,000 to fund 1,400 hours of critical childhood cancer research and support projects that pave the way for better treatments and cures.
“Every day, more than 1,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with childhood cancer,” said Leo Tucker, managing partner of Northwestern Mutual Washington, D.C. “We are honored to come together as a community and host this event to support a cause that touches so many.”
More than 160 attendees gathered at The Barns at Wolf Trap for the event, enjoying live entertainment from Nashville-based singer-songwriters Rivers Rutherford, Tim Nichols and Jamie O’Neal. The event also featured remarks from Tracie Richardson, the mother of teenager, Rylie Richards, speaking to her daughter’s story with childhood cancer and the impact of ALSF. Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual Washington, D.C. has rallied the community, raising more than $300,000 for ALSF.

“The partnership with Northwestern Mutual has helped push the boundaries of cancer research, bringing us closer to a reality where no child or their loved ones have to endure the pain of cancer,” said Liz Scott, Alex’s mother and co-executive director of ALSF. "While this mission can seem daunting at times, Alex’s belief that 'we can do it’ if we all work together continues to inspire us."
In addition to the support of the Washington, D.C. office, Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, has funded more than 700,000 hours of research to accelerate the search for better treatments and cures for childhood cancer and contributed more than $60 million to the cause overall. About Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of 4-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was fighting cancer and wanted to raise money to find cures for all children with cancer. Her spirit and determination inspired others to support her cause, and when she passed away at the age of 8, she had raised $1 million. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement. Today, ALSF is one of the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S. and Canada raising more than $250 million so far, funding over 1,000 research projects and providing programs to families affected by childhood cancer.
