NoVa, DC Top New Year's Eve Events: Patch Picks

There are a variety of ways to celebrate the new year in the Washington metro, including balls, fireworks and a gala at National Harbor.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — New Year's Day is a time for resolutions, starting anew or, depending on how you spent the night before, recovering from too much celebration. But before any of that, it's time to party, and in Washington and Northern Virginia, there are plenty of ways to do it.

The numbing polar air moving into the region could put a damper on outdoor events. While it has not announced one yet, the National Weather service says a wind chill advisory may be issued for Sunday, when the daytime high is expected to reach only 24 degrees and the low will drop to 12.

Because of frigid weather, Downtown 31's New Year's Eve Family Fun Night at Riverfront Park in Fredericksburg has been cancelled, the city said Friday. "(The forecast) has already affected many of the planned activities for Sunday's event, many of which will not be able to perform in the extreme cold to include the band, several children's activities and several food vendors. For the safety of everyone we feel it best to cancel the Family Fun Night."

You could go to a house party or any number of nightclubs or bars hosting events. A comedy show is planned at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Fredericksburg, while fun for kids starts Sunday afternoon at First Night Alexandria with fireworks over the Potomac at midnight. Big Night DC, the area's largest New Year's Eve event, has more than a half-dozen themed parties at Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center, National Harbor; and the annual black tie gala will take place at the Marriott Wardman Park.
