Parkland Survivor Speaks Out For DC
David Hogg has become a media sensation due to his gun control activism, and he's now using his voice for D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC -- David Hogg has been one of the most recognizable survivors from the Parkland, Fla. school shooting that led to a massive gun control march in D.C. earlier this year. In a new tweet, he's sticking up for the rights of D.C. residents.
"Washington D.C. needs actual congressional representation," Hogg tweeted Sunday. The sentiment struck a chord with his followers, as in less than 24 hours it has been retweeted 5,000 times and liked 27,000 times.
The push for statehood is something D.C. has been known for, but it is undoubtedly a long shot: Republicans would be opposed to such a measure because it would give Democrats two U.S. senators and a representative permanently, because the city leans so heavily Democratic. Even in 1984 in Ronald Reagan's famous landslide presidential victory, D.C. overwhelmingly voted for his opponent, Walter Mondale. Only Minnesota, Mondale's home state, joined D.C. in opposing Reagan.

Republicans are more likely to support a measure that would have D.C. be absorbed into Maryland, which already votes heavily Democrat anyway.
Notably, Hogg didn't specifically demand D.C. statehood -- just "congressional representation," which both measures would fit.
