Sobriety Checkpoint Planned Friday In Laurel: Police

The Laurel Police ​Department will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint this Friday.

LAUREL, MD — The Laurel Police Department will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint this Friday.

The checkpoint will be held in the 100 block of Second St. to "promote public awareness and educate citizens about the dangers of impaired driving," police said in a statement.

Law enforcement agencies must announce when checkpoints will be held, but drivers are still frequently found driving impaired, police said.

Driving under the influence in Maryland carries a maximum penalty of 12 months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and a six-month suspension of driving privileges.
