Taxes Going Up In DC This Week
The increase is part of a plan to pay for Metro transit system dedicated funding.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Taxes are going up in D.C., and you can thank Metro for that.
The Washington Post reports that the general sales tax will increase to 6 percent on Monday from 5.75 percent as part of a plan to pay for the District's $179 million share for a Metro transit system dedicated fund.
The D.C. estate tax exemption is also being adjusted to $5.6 million. Previously, the exemption level was tied to the federal level, which increased to $11 million after the Republican tax bill was signed into law, according to the report.
