Washington DC Is America’s Most Frugal City: Reports

DC area residents have a passion for saving, according to Coupons.com.

WASHINGTON, DC — When it comes to pinching pennies, DC residents are the nation’s best. That’s according to Coupons.com, which Washington, DC as the most frugal city in America in 2016. The report based rankings on the number of digital coupons downloaded per capita in an area during 2016.

Coupons.com’s data came from its parent company, Quotient Technology Inc., which counted downloads made by residents across the United States through the Coupons.com website, its mobile app and the site’s partners across the country. The website has published its rankings index for seven years.

Quotient Technology estimated that residents in the DC area saved $31.9 million by downloading more than 23 million digital coupons in 2016. This helped DC overtake Orlando as number one for the first time in the seven-year history of the index.

"Whatever the reason – a bitter election, the loss of pop icons – people sought out digital coupons to stretch their budgets and, perhaps, to make themselves feel better," the website states.

Other cities that took saving more seriously include: Dallas, TX; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Nashville, TN; Tampa, FL and Cleveland, OH.

“The Most Frugal Cities list from Coupons.com demonstrates that shoppers throughout the country are using coupons to stretch their dollars,” Jeanette Pavini, Coupons.com’s consumer savings expert, said in announcing the rankings. “People work hard to earn a living, want to get the most out of their money, and they are saving hundreds of dollars a year by using digital coupons.”
