Washington DC Schools Rank Near Bottom In New Survey

A new study puts Washington DC schools near the bottom of quality/safety rankings for schools in the US, while Virginia is near the top.

WASHINGTON, DC — As Washington, D.C., parents prepare to send their kids back to school in a few weeks, a new ranking says their school system has lost ground when compared with those in other parts of the country, according to a new study released by WalletHub. The District ranked No. 48th overall in a new study published by the personal-finance website. Schools in West Virginia, New Mexico and Louisiana were the only ones to fare worse in the analysis.

Personal finance website WalletHub used 21 metrics to measure quality and safety, giving Washington, DC, its bottom five overall ranking for 2017. The analysis accounts for performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials, among other factors.

Meanwhile, neighboring Virginia was ranked at No. 6 overall, and Maryland was rated No. 19 nationwide. Virginia ranked eighth for both the quality and safety of its schools. In contrast, DC schools ranked 50th for quality and 30th overall for safety.
