Across civilizations and centuries, New Year’s Eve has marked one of humanity’s most enduring moments: the pause between what has been and what is yet to come. Rooted in astronomy, shaped by religion and culture, and sustained by a universal hope for renewal, the turning of the year has always carried deeper meaning than a simple change of date.

This December 31, the Founding Church of Scientology invites the Washington, DC community to take part in that timeless tradition at its New Year’s Eve Open House, open to all from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST.

From Ancient Beginnings to Modern Reflection

The earliest recorded New Year celebrations date back more than 4,000 years to ancient Babylon, where the new year began with the spring equinox—nature’s own symbol of rebirth. Their 12-day Akitu festival honored renewal, responsibility, and hope for the future.

Centuries later, ancient Rome reshaped the calendar itself. In 46 BCE, Julius Caesar established January 1 as the start of the new year, naming the month after Janus, the two-faced god of transitions—one face looking back, the other forward. Romans marked the occasion with gift-giving, decorations, and personal promises for better conduct in the year ahead—early versions of today’s New Year’s resolutions.

Through the Middle Ages and into the modern era, New Year’s observances evolved across cultures, eventually becoming a largely secular celebration centered on community, reflection, and anticipation. From fireworks and midnight countdowns to shared meals and resolutions, the themes have remained remarkably consistent.
