WikiLeaks Offers $20,000 for Info on DNC Staffer Slaying

The site has been involved in a very public battle with the Democratic Party in recent months.

WASHINGTON, DC — WikiLeaks has been waging a public battle against the Democratic Party for months, and now the site is publicly offering $20,000 for information about the slaying of a Democratic National Committee staffer in Northwest Washington, D.C., in July — although WikiLeaks hasn't yet revealed why it's interested in that info.

"WikiLeaks has decided to issue a US$20k reward for information leading to conviction for the murder of DNC staffer Seth Rich," WikiLeaks tweeted from its official account Aug. 9.

The slaying of the 27-year-old staffer, who was shot to death as he walked home in Northwest D.C. near Howard University Hospital, shocked the people who worked with him at the DNC, and the community at large. The shooting may have been a botched robbery, early reports indicated, although some have questioned that narrative.

WikiLeaks hasn't publicly commented on its motivation for wanting the information, but the site certainly has not been a friend to the Democratic Party in recent months. The site has defended itself from accusations that the Russian government is using it to swing the presidential election toward Donald Trump after the site published reams of embarrassing DNC emails. Even Tuesday, the site ripped Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as corrupt and repeatedly asserted that it had no connections with the Russians.

The Metropolitan Police Department is actually offering a larger reward — up to $25,000 — for information on Rich's death.
